Co-op Business

Although almost everyone has heard of ‘the co-op’, it can be a little confusing as to what this actually means.  A definition of a co-operative is an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly-owned and democratically controlled enterprise.  In the United Kingdom, there are many co-operative societies including such diverse businesses as grocery supermarkets & convenience stores, financial services including banking & insurance, travel agencies, farms & dairies.   Often these co-operatives are independent societies with a long history of serving their customers, members and local communities.

co-operative Xest is the latest venture from The Southern Co-operative.  The Southern Co-operative is an independent co-operative society founded in 1873, with over 3,000 employees, 70,000 members and over 150 outlets. We operate our business according to the co-operative values of:

  • Democracy
  • Equality
  • Equity
  • Mutual self-help
  • Responsibility
  • Solidarity

As a society we believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others. These ethical values have held us in good stead for over 130 years and our financial prudence provides reassurance and certainty in a world that can sometimes seem volatile and uncertain. We recognise the importance of people, especially our colleagues, customers and the communities in which we work.
